The focus of every believer ought to be growth in relationship with the Lord, from knowing the Lord to loving the Lord, to becoming a friend of God. This trajectory can however not be achieved when we do not know how to pursue friendship with God at the expense of the things of this world.

One cannot fully love the Lord and love something else equally because love means totally giving oneself to a thing or a course. Just as our opening text says, it is impossible to be a friend of this world and a friend of God at the same time. If you choose to be friends with God, then you must become an enemy to the world. In other words, you must cut off things that hinder our relationship with God.

Whatever competes for the time and worship that is due to the Lord is not worth keeping. When you therefore begin to find yourself giving too much attention to a thing more than you give to God, then it may be time to give that thing up, so that your undivided attention might be towards God.

Remember, only the Lord deserves to be worshipped with all your might, all your strength and all your heart; nothing else qualifies for that level of attention. Therefore, fight to ensure that nothing takes the time, resources, oblations or priority that you have separated for Him. Make the Lord your daily pursuit, and He will reveal Himself to you in a new way!
