DESIST FROM EYE-SERVICE

Read in your own language

May 5, 2023

Scriptural Text:
Colossians 3:23  (NKJV
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;”

The essence of work is to produce desired results. However, beyond the physical input of work, the motivation behind our work also matters. Our opening text emphasizes this by showing us two ways that people often work; heartily as unto God, or in eye-service to impress men.

The term ‘eye-service’ is used to describe a behaviour where a person only works hard or performs well when he knows that someone is watching. It is pretending to be productive and hardworking only for the sake of appearances or to avoid getting into trouble.

For instance, in the workplace, some people resort to eye-service with the excuse that they are being under-appreciated. In other words, they feel that they do not need to exert themselves on a job because they do not really earn enough anyway. However, our opening text shows us that the focus of our work ought not to be for the purpose of impressing man, but rather, on pleasing God. This highlights the importance of doing things for the right reasons, and not just to gain approval or recognition from others.

Ultimately, doing things with integrity is not only fulfilling because of the immediate returns, but also because it leads to personal growth in the long run, and shows your accountability to a higher authority.

Therefore, whatever you do, remember to act in accordance with your values and principles, regardless of whether anyone is watching or aware of your actions. This would require courage and discipline, and may not always be easy, but it is always worth it in the end.
