Most of us like to have an explanation for everything that happens around us. We like to know why things happen, and when we do not understand it, we get troubled. We base our peace on how well we comprehend the situation around us, yet we are not all knowing, and so we often fret.
There is a peace better than knowing why. It is the peace that the Bible refers to as passing understanding (Phil. 4:7). Our opening text today shows us where that peace may be found, in stillness before God.
The doubt, worries and fear we sometimes harbour in our minds about life are because we do not possess an intimate knowledge of God. But in quiet time, we get to know more of His plans and purposes for us and thus gain new confidence and the assurance of life’s outcomes based on our knowledge of Him. Thus, no matter what we see, we are not easily moved.
Sometimes, God uses storms to train our inner peace, so not every storm must be immediately calmed. However, we must learn to maintain peace even amid the storm. Jesus slept even during the storm and His disciples had to wake Him up (Mark 4:37-38) because He had inner peace – a peace that comes out of an understanding of God, and not necessarily the explanation of why the storm came.
Remember that God is our sufficiency (2Cor. 3:5). He is enough to give you peace no matter what you do not understand. You can obtain that peace as you spend quiet time in His presence today.
