PRACTICE SELF-CONTROL

Read in your own language

May 15, 2023

Scriptural Text:
1Corinthians 9:27 (NKJV)
“But I discipline my body and keep it under control.”

Self-control is defined as the ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviour, especially in the face of temptations and impulses. It is being able to resist impulsive or emotional reactions while responding in a more thoughtful and intentional way.

Apostle Paul, in our opening text today, speaks of how he goes the extra mile in disciplining his own body, to keep it under control. In other words, self-control can be developed through practice, and strengthened by building healthy habits.

Practicing self-control also serves as a form of protection for you against the wiles of the enemy. We see this in the example of Joseph who escaped the trap set by Potiphar’s wife, simply by practicing self-control (Gen. 39:8-13).

However, as we see with Joseph, holding yourself accountable to the Word of God is key in building self-control (Psa. 119:11). In addition, beyond the physical efforts you may put in, it takes the help of God’s Spirit to put your body under in every situation. This is why there cannot be self-control without the help of God’s Spirit.

Therefore, commit to the study of the Word and ask for the help of God’s Spirit today as you practice self-control.
