THE STATE OF REPENTANCE.

Read in your own language

Behold, I was sharpen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

Psalm 51:5

Repentance is more than an act. It is also a state of soberness, brokenness, and contriteness.  When you maintain a broken and contrite heart, you are in a state of repentance. The state of repentance is a product of dealing with unknown sin because of the realization of your human nature and its shortcomings. In this state, you carry a consciousness of your humanity and frailty, compared to His divinity which causes you to rue in your heart.

When you consider how great God is compared to your state, you ought to repent. You are nothing but dust (Ecclesiastes 3:20), and according to the psalmist ‘what is man that God is mindful of him and visits him? (psalm 8:4). You were fashioned in iniquity as our opening text reveals. This is enough reason to repent. Thus, repentance is not only of sin known but of sin unknown.

This is because sin is more than committing an act but also a state. The reason we commit sin is because of the state of sin. As long as we exist in the flesh, we are in a state of sin.  In other words, by virtue of our existence, we sin.

So, true repentance puts you in a state of brokenness and soberness because of your state of sin.  When you maintain this brokenness, you are in the state of repentance. This is the state God wants you to maintain. Whenever you consider your humanity, frailty, or weaknesses, learn to repent before God.
