OBEDIENCE TO YOUR PARENTS PROLONGS YOUR LIFE.

Read in your own language

Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Deut 5:16

When the commandment to honor one’s parents, was first given to the Israelites on Mount Sinai, it not only instructed obedience, but explained the positive outcome of honoring one’s parents- (‘that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you’). This is the fifth commandment that was given by Moses to the people of Israel, and is the first commandment that comes with a promise.

This is a command to all regardless of age. To honor your father and mother is not a command that God expects to change as one gets older or evolves in status. Rather, it is an unchanging ordinance the sight of God. The word “honor” imparts the consciousness of not taking one’s parents lightly but relating to them with gravity and esteem.

Therefore, honor your parents by respecting them, treating them with kindness, and holding their counsel in high esteem. It is never right to despise or ridicule your parents, even if they have done something deserving of such treatment. Place them in high regard in your heart and choose to follow God’s command of honor them always. Glory to God!
